In preparation for the 2017 heat wave and long hot summer season of the Desert in the Coachella Valley, Southern California Edison (SCE) is exploiting a mandatory shut-off of electricity in certain parts and multiple cities in the Palm Springs and East Coachella Valley region. Starting Monday June 19, 2017 until Wednesday June 21, 2017, there will be a deliberate power outage to help save electricity for SCE.

During PDRE’s high-quality educational and certification courses and public health seminars, we strive to instill preventative measures of dehydration symptoms that could lead to more dangerous health issues.

Let’s talk about dehydration. Once you are thirsty, you are probably already dehydrated. Dehydration happens because someone may lose enough bodily fluids through heat exposure, increased or excessive physical activity, gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting and diarrhea, infection, decreased oral intake of fluids and/or food, and other conditions that predisposes to dehydration like diabetes, kidney and liver disease among other clinical conditions and diseases. If not treated appropriately, dehydration may lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, shock, and cardiopulmonary arrest that may lead to death. Weaknesses, thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, confusion, or less urination than usual are some of things to consider for proper dehydration cure and remedy.

Symptoms, Signs, and Progression of Heat-Related/Environmental Dehydration, Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke:

If you suspect that you have moderate to severe forms of dehydration, please contact a healthcare provider right away to determine the medical and clinical management of your dehydration.

Again, prevention is a must when it comes to staying hydrated, making sure to drink and eat enough as well as decrease exposure that may lead to heat-related/environment dehydration.

Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Once heat exhaustion hits a person, he or she can have signs of nausea, dizziness, faint, lightheaded, vomiting, muscle cramps, fatigue, and heavy sweating. At this point, have the person away from the heat exposure and lay them down in a cool place. Remove as much clothing as possible; cool them down with a cool water spray; and you can also place cool, damp cloths on the neck, armpits, and groin. Just like heat cramps, you may give them a sports drink with sugar and electrolytes or water if that is all you have.

Finally, if heat exhaustion is not recognize and treated, there is a likelihood for heat stroke, which is a very dangerous and life threatening to say the least. He or she may have altered mentation such as confusion, may have syncopal episodes or pass out, seizures, and as well as the signs and symptoms of heat cramps and heat exhaustion. It’s important to call for help and 911 as soon as possible. Begin cooling the person quickly. Water spray works if you cannot immerse the person in cool water until the person begins to feel like their normal self again. The person may go into hypovolemic shock and even may need CPR. It is advisable to see a healthcare professional as soon as possible.

However, most residents who are going to be affected by the SCE power outage in the Desert for a couple of hours without electricity and probably without air conditioning, may obviously head to the a location where there is air conditioning, such as a family or friend’s home, local coffee shop, library, department store, or other venues where there is enough shade, cool environment, and with plenty of options to hydrate oneself.

Combating Heat Exhaustion

To combat heat cramps, which are painful muscle spasms that most often occur in the calves, arms, abdomen, and back along with probable sweating and headache, take action before it gets worse.  It should be advised to rest, cool off, have a sports drink with sugar and electrolytes or water if that is all you have. You may also apply a bag of ice and water wrapped in a towel for 20 minutes.

Wear loose clothing and put on a sunscreen with SPF protection from UV lights with sunglasses if you are going to stay outside for a longer time especially during the heat wave.

Prevention is the mainstay cure for dehydration by hydrating with modest amounts of fluids in water or sports drinks with glucose (to prevent hypoglycemia), salts (sodium, potassium, and chloride) and other nutrients. There is no real definitive set amounts to abate the symptoms of mild to moderate dehydration but the best is to actual drink enough liquids to keep your from feeling those grave signs and symptoms of dehydration. Remember free fluid in water may not have the right pH as your body’s because it has no electrolytes but you do not have to buy expensive sports drinks such as Gatorade, Powerade, and Propel Vitamin Water for instance to get hydrated. Make sure you fill your ice chest with your favorite non-alcoholic beverages. There are thermoses out there like the Corkcicle Bottles that cools your drink for 12-24 hours. You can buy spraying mist bottles to spray on your skin for the evaporative cooling.

For the children and kids who may also need more hydration needs, you can give them flavored ice cubes and popsicles that you can make before the power outage, which are fun tricks to get your young ones to see the importance of hydration. Obviously, education is key and letting them know why they need to understand that dehydration cannot be good for them.

In addition, there are special populations out there such those with diabetes as well as those with kidney and heart issues who have certain recommendations for their hydration based on their medical providers guidelines and should check with their healthcare provider such as the primary care physician, internist, or specialist for more detailed information about their hydration needs.

If you have any signs and symptoms of any lethargy, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fainting spells during these power outages and hot summer months, you may very well be having heat exhaustion that could lead to a heat stroke and other life threatening conditions.
